How I prepared for the Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer exam

These are the steps that worked for me. Always check the official exam guide on the Google Cloud certification site first – it lists the current domains.

Weeks 1–2: foundations

• BigQuery design: partitioning, clustering, pricing, security.
• Storage choices: Cloud Storage, Bigtable, Spanner, Cloud SQL.

Weeks 3–4: pipelines

• Pub/Sub and Dataflow (windows, watermarks, late data).
• Dataproc vs Dataflow; orchestration with Composer.

Week 5: governance, ML and operations

• IAM, policy tags, VPC Service Controls, Dataplex.
• BigQuery ML and Vertex AI basics; monitoring and reliability.

Week 6: practice

Do hands-on labs, take practice questions and, for every scenario, say out loud which service you would pick and why the others are worse. That habit also helps in architect interviews.
